In this post I share my favourite non-toxic makeup products. If you want to switch to using clean beauty products that are better for you and the environment then you are in the right place.
I have spent the last few years trying different clean beauty brands and have finally settled on a handful of products that both perform well and are made with non-toxic ingredients. These are products that work well for me, which I have personal experience using. I am in no way claiming to be a beauty expert, just a mother in my late thirties trying to keep my toxic load to a minimum.
Depending on your makeup routine, you may use different types of products to the ones I share below. However, I would encourage you to check out the different product ranges of the brands I have featured to see what they offer.
You don’t need to completely overhaul your makeup routine in one go. As and when you use up the products you already own, you can opt for less toxic alternatives.

Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Makeup
As women, we are often exposed to huge number of chemicals and endocrine disruptors (which interfere with our hormones) on a daily basis, due to the amount of different products we use for personal care and around the home. One way we can reduce our exposure to harmful toxins is by choosing products that contain cleaner and safer ingredients.
If you are interested to see how clean your current cosmetics are then you can search for them on the EWG’s Skin Deep Database.
According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website here are some of the ingredients we should aim to avoid when choosing makeup products:
- Retinoic acid and retinyl palmitate derivatives
- Styrene acrylates copolymer
- Mercury (thimerosal)
- Fragrance (parfum)
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
- Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
- Triclosan and triclocarban
- Aminophenol, diaminobenzene, phenylenediamine (coal tar)
- Polyethylene/PEGs
- Petroleum distillates
- Talc
- Toulene
My Non-Toxic Makeup Routine
I currently wear quite minimal, or even no makeup, on a day to day basis. My minimal makeup routine includes moisturiser, foundation, eyeliner, mascara, blusher and some lip balm (as shown in the photo below). If I am going out on an evening or for a special occasion I will also use a primer, eyeshadow, eyebrow pencil and lipstick.

Moisturiser
My favourite moisturiser is the Scent Free 24 Hour Anti-Aging cream by Green People. I have quite dry skin and this keeps it moisturised all day. I like that it contains organic ingredients and prebiotics.
This unscented face cream is alcohol-free, silicone free, SLS free, paraben free, gluten free, lanolin free and phthalate free. I am based in the UK and I haven’t been able to find it being sold in the US. See below for my moisturiser recommendation if you are based in the US.

Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream is the moisturiser I would go for if you are based in the US or Canada. Osea is a wonderful clean beauty brand and this is a great moisturiser to wear under makeup.

Primer
I don’t use primer every day, but when I do use this Radiant Glow Veil primer from Inika Organic it really enhances my complexion. It provides a great base for my foundation and gives my skin a lovely glow.
Inika Organic is by far my favourite clean beauty brand. I am gradually switching over to using all of their products. It is an Australian brand that uses all natural and organic ingredients. They are also the world’s first Plastic Neutral makeup brand.

Foundation
Inika Organic Liquid Foundation is both makeup and skincare in one sustainable bottle. Formulated with organic hyaluronic acid, botanical extracts, and Argan Oil rich in essential fatty acids, this foundation boosts skin elasticity and plumpness. This foundation provides really good coverage, without feeling cakey. I wear the shade ‘Nude’.

Eyeshadow
Inika Organic also have three different colour Eyeshadow Quads. I have the shade ‘Sunset’ shown below. I tend to just apply eyeshadow for parties or special occasions, so I don’t use it every day. The colours in this palette are stunning and it has good staying powder.

Eyeliner
This Liquid Eyeliner from Benecos is a good budget friendly option, which uses organic plant oils and minerals. I used Rimmel liquid eyeliner for years and this works just as well, but is made up of cleaner ingredients.

Mascara
Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara has to be one of the most popular non-toxic mascaras currently out there. It goes on nicely, but I find I have to be really careful not to touch my eyes to avoid it becoming flaky if I’m wearing it all day. If I only wear it for a few hours at a time it’s fine. I will probably try Inika’s mascara once this has been used up though.

Blusher
I have always been more of a blusher kind of girl and have never really used bronzer. I have two different types of blusher from Inika Organic. I tend to use the Blush Pot on more of a day to day basis, as it’s really quick and easy to use. You just need a quick stroke along your cheekbones and you instantly look healthier. I have the shade ‘Rosy Glow’.

I also have the Inika Organic Lip & Cheek Cream in the shade ‘Morning’. This is a lovely coral colour with a very subtle shimmer to give your cheeks a nice healthy looking glow.

Lip Balm
Hands down my favourite lip balm to use at the moment is the Coconut lip balm by Hurraw! This smells amazing! It contains organic ingredients, is non-GMO and is made in the USA by a small business.

I am still using my Clinique lipstick, Rimmel kohl eyeliner and eyebrow pencil currently, but I plan on replacing these with non-toxic alternatives once they have been used up. I will update this post once I’ve used them.
Let me know in the comments below if you have a favourite clean beauty brand and I will be sure to check them out!
