Autumn Simmer Pot
This Autumn Simmer Pot recipe will fill your home with the warm and spicy scents of autumn. It’s the perfect way to make your home feel cosy in a natural way, without having to use any toxic scented candles or air fresheners.
I love a Pumpkin Spice scented candle, but finding one made with just essential oils and soy wax can be an expensive option. This simmer pot is a great alternative that uses ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Simple and easy to create in a slow cooker or in a pot on the stovetop
- You can reuse the same ingredients for several days
- A natural and non-toxic way to fill your home with the scents of autumn
- Can help to add some humidity to your home, when you have the heating on during the colder winter months
Ingredients
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 2 apples (any variety)
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 tablespoon cloves
- Water (amount will depend on the size of your vessel)
Equipment
- Slow cooker (I use a Crock Pot) or Dutch oven or saucepan
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Teaspoons & tablespoons
How to Make an Autumn Simmer Pot
Step 1
Cut up your apples into chunks or thin slices.
Add the apple slices to your slow cooker, saucepan or Dutch oven.
Step 2
Measure out your spices and add these to the pot.
Step 3
Fill your pot with water, leaving about 1 inch space at the top so it doesn’t boil over.
Step 4
Whether you are using a slow cooker or pot on the stove, start by setting the temperature to high until the water starts to boil, then switch it down to the lowest temperature setting.
Leave it to simmer away (without a lid on) for as long as you like.
Just be sure to switch off your appliance if go out.
Also keep an eye on the water level. If all of the water evaporates the ingredients may start to burn.
Additional Tips
Safety First: Turn off your slow cooker or stovetop before leaving the house for safety.
Keep the Lid Off: Don’t put a lid on the pot whilst it is on, or you won’t be able to smell the wonderful scents being created.
Reuse the Ingredients: You can use the same ingredients for several days in a row. Just make sure that your pot is kept topped up with enough water, otherwise the ingredients will start to dry out and burn. Put a lid on the pot overnight to help preserve the ingredients.
Alternative Ingredients: Feel free to adapt the recipe according to your scent preferences. I have chosen to include scents that I associate with autumn, but other ingredients like vanilla, ginger, star anise or fresh oranges would also smell great in this simmer pot.
