This post will provide you with a list of the best books to read aloud with your children this spring. Spring is the perfect time to get outside with your children and notice the miracle of nature coming back to life after a long and sleepy winter. Celebrate the beauty and wonder of springtime with your child by sharing one of these wonderful books.
A lot of these books I have been able to buy secondhand online from either eBay or World of Books. I would also encourage you to have a look in your local library for seasonal children’s books. For convenience though I have included links to buying these books on Amazon.

Spring Books for Babies & Toddlers
Spring by Gerda Muller
This board book is part of a four part set, showcasing beautiful illustrations of children enjoying each season. Despite not containing any words, this is one of my favourite spring books to look through with my children. It’s lovely to look at the pictures and talk about what the children are doing. Spring features lots of baby animals, planting seeds in the garden and painting Easter eggs. This book is suitable from birth and my 8 year old daughter also still enjoys it.
Seasons & Sounds – Listen to Spring illustrated by Morena Forza
My toddler loves looking through this colourful board book. Each page contains a button for your child to press to hear springtime sounds such as birds singing, lambs baaing and splashing puddle sounds. The pictures are lovely and bright and show children outside enjoying nature during springtime. Each page contains a short rhyming sentence. This is a four part series, one book for each season, which would make a great gift for a toddler. These board books are suitable from birth.
Fluffy Chick by Rod Campbell
This is a ‘Touch and Feel’ board book about a fluffy chick that lives on a farm. It’s a lovely tactile book that showcases all the animals you can expect to find on a farm such as chickens, sheep, pigs, cows and cats. This would make a great gift for a baby or toddler at Easter.
Spring Books for Kids
We’re Going on an Egg Hunt by Laura Hughes
This is a fun lift the flap book, which is an Easter version of the book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. A group of rabbits set out on an Easter egg hunt and encounter all sorts of animals along the way such as ducks, bees, chicks and lambs. They can’t go over them, they can’t go under them and they can’t go around them so… they have to go through them! My daughter was gifted this book for her first Easter and it’s been great to get out every year since.
Brambly Hedge Spring Story by Jill Barklem
These seasonal stories follow a little community of mice that live in adorable miniature homes set within the roots and trunks of Brambly Hedge. The illustrations are really intricate and beautiful. In Spring Story the mice come together to throw little Wilfred a surprise birthday party picnic. We have the Brambly Hedge collection, which features a story for each season. You can also buy the individual stories, which I have linked to below. I would say these books are suitable from age 5 upwards.
Busy Spring – Nature Wakes Up by Sean Taylor & Alex Morss
Busy Spring is the story of two children and their father discovering all the different ways their garden is waking up from a long sleepy winter. Suitable for children age 5 and up.
She splashed through a puddle. Birds flew up and carried on chattering in the trees. “The birds are all busy!” I said.
Dad told us, “Everything is busy. The plants are busy. The animals are busy. Spring’s a busy time.“
~ Busy Spring
Usborne Peep Inside Springtime by Anna Millbourne
This is a lovely, colourful, interactive book for children to discover all the different ways nature is busy during springtime. Suitable for ages 3 and above.
Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Spring by Eric Carle
In this lovely little book you can learn all about seasonal sensory experiences, like watching clouds change shapes, feeling cool rain on your skin and sniffing fresh blooming flowers.
“Outside, grass grows, and tress sprout new leaves.
Watch clouds change shape as they float in the breeze.”
~ The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Spring
Little Bear’s Spring by Elli Woollard
Little Bear’s Spring is a lovely story about friendship, with a gentle introduction to spring and what happens to the natural world when the seasons change. The illustrations in this book are beautiful, I highly recommend it. Suitable from age 4 upwards.
Books about all Four Seasons
A Year in Our New Garden by Gerda Muller
This is another fantastic book by Gerda Muller featuring all of the wonderful and simple ways we can enjoy our gardens throughout the different seasons. Anna and Benjamin’s family have just moved to a new house and can’t wait to turn their messy yard into a beautiful garden, but first they must plan, plant and learn how to care for it. Suitable for ages 4 and up.
The Story Orchestra – Four Seasons in One Day illustrated by Jessica Courtney-Tickle
I love The Story Orchestra book series. These books are a wonderful way to introduce children to classical pieces of music. This story follows a little girl on an adventure through the four seasons. On each page there is a button which plays an excerpt from The Four Seasons violin concerto by Vivaldi. Suitable for children aged 4 and above.
Out and About – A First Book of Poems by Shirley Hughes
The illustrations in this book are so nostalgic and remind me of how much simpler life was growing up in the 80s and 90s. Shirley Hughes is a fantastic author, I love her books. In this book she has written a few poems that capture the essence of each season through the eyes of a child. I highly recommend this book. Some of the poems require a slightly longer attention span, so I would say this book is suitable from age 4 onwards.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this list of spring inspired books. I plan on adding to this post as I discover more books with my children in the future.
